A UNIQUE AREA RUG TO BRIGHTEN THE DECOR

If you want to add instant pizzazz to the decor of your kid’s room, put down an area rug featuring lots of colours, an interesting pattern or both. If you want to run with a theme for your kid’s room (more on that later), try to find a rug that will match it.

Dreaming of driving in their race car bed? An area rug with a track on it would fit perfectly! Do they want to be an astronaut when they grow up? Something that features the solar system will tie the room together.

This high-flying rug is perfect for any little aviators out there and is available in a round, rectangular or square shape, depending on the room.

An attractive area rug can serve as the focus of a kid’s room, or as the final piece that brings it all together. You can use elements from the rug to find the right bedding, window treatments, and paint colours too.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THEMES

Some easy, inexpensive kid room decor ideas would be to establish a theme including all your child’s favourite things.

  • Basketball buff: you can put up a few posters of his or her favourite players or teams. Get a bedspread with images of basketballs on it, get a comfy chair with a slipcover featuring a referee’s black and white stripes and set up a plastic basketball hoop on one wall of the room. This type of idea would work with any sports fan.
  • Under the Sea: hang an inexpensive fishing net from a craft store on a wall and put plastic fish and lobsters in it. Paint the walls a light blue and get some fish templates, so you can add some colourful sea creatures into the ocean.
  • The Explorer: get some wallpaper or a mural with a world map on it and use that for a feature wall in the room, then paint the other walls in a complementary colour. Old trunks will enhance the decor and can be used for storage too!
  • An Animal-Lover: for the younger crowd, you can go with a Noah’s Ark theme and fun stuffed animals throughout the room. If your kid is a horse-rider or adores tigers, use that! A fun poster with the different breeds of horses in a frame dresses it up, or creating a safari-like feel in their room makes the tiger feel right at home.
  • A Potterhead: have some fun and create the world of Harry Potter in your child’s room. Curtains around their bed, pillows in the house colours and a marauders map will make any kid feel like they’re sleeping at Hogwarts! Check out these House Wall Banners, which would make a great addition.

COORDINATING THE CURTAINS AND BEDSPREAD

The repetition of a pattern or colour is an easy way to bring harmony to the décor of a kid’s room. A set of curtains featuring a blue and white check pattern goes well with a bedspread sharing the same pattern. Curtains featuring a popular cartoon character would pair well with a bedspread displaying the same character.

You don’t have to go full-match if that feels like a little too much. You can play with the bedding and choose a colour from it for your window coverings.

A MIX OF PATTERNS

Mixing patterns together can make a kid’s room come alive. Don’t be afraid to mix stripes in your area rug with polka dots on the bedspread and geometric shapes on a beanbag chair. Add curtains in a solid colour to balance out the rest of this wild décor!

Another idea is to paint the walls of your child’s room a solid colour. Next, select an inexpensive wallpaper border featuring stripes, zig-zags or checks to mix in a fun pattern. Just make sure the border will complement the wall colour.

SHADES OF THE SAME COLOR

Create the room’s décor around your child’s favourite colour. If your child loves purple, then paint the walls lavender and get a plum-coloured bedspread. Look for an area rug with a design including different shades of purple to mix up the brights and darks in the room.

THEIR OWN SPACE

Have you got kids that share a room? Let them choose what they like! You can mix and match a variety of styles so they both feel like they’ve got their own little space in their room. Maybe one has a glow-in-the-dark solar system on one wall of their bed while the other has fun animal stickers on their side. Give them their own decor around their bed and leave the rest of the room more neutral.

GO GREYSCALE

Hear me out… not everything for a child has to be in colour! This kid’s room decor idea runs with the concept of going from black to grey to white, giving you the perfect backdrop for some standout pieces. Modern and geometric patterns enhance the design elements of this idea.

This grey hanging canopy would fit right into this idea and can be used over the bed or in a corner to create a cozy reading nook.
